Beigang Sugar Refinery: The Sweet Era

Established in 1911, the Beigang Sugar Refinery holds over a century of history and was once a vital economic pillar for the region. Among the many sugar refineries in Taiwan, the one located in Beigang—protected by the goddess Mazu—is truly unique.
While the refinery supported the people's livelihoods through economic prosperity, the Chaotian Temple and Mazu served as the spiritual center, nurturing their souls. Beigang integrates these two inner and outer forces, blending spiritual strength with material abundance. With both the refinery and Mazu, Beigang has become a blessed town radiating light, stability, and sweetness.

Creation Concept: Auspicious Clouds of Light

This work blends sugar industry culture with the blessings of Mazu. It utilizes "sugar crystals" as units to form clouds and "sugarcane" as pillars to create the "Auspicious Clouds of Light," reminiscent of a temple gateway (Paifang). This design echoes the name "Yunlin" (Cloud Forest) and the faith in Mazu. Combined with lighting and floral-patterned light boxes on the ground, it radiates warmth at night, surrounding visitors with the stories and sweetness of Beigang.
We hope this piece allows everyone to feel the radiant and sweet nature of Beigang. The auspicious clouds composed of sugar crystals symbolize Mazu sprinkling sweetness and beauty from the sky, wishing everyone who visits a life filled with brightness and happiness.

Auspicious Clouds of Light is more than an installation; it is a space for gathering, capable of hosting future performances and events. It allows new stories to unfold and various cultural atmospheres to accumulate here.

Beyond representing sweetness and blessings, the work connects with Beigang’s identity as the "Home of Lantern Festivals." The steel structure reflects traditional lantern frames, and with the integrated lighting design, it becomes a continuous bloom of light—a sparkling cultural landscape that offers a vision of a bright future for all.

As travelers pass through the work into the refinery, they receive the sweetness of sugar and the blessings of the clouds. Within this warm atmosphere, they can experience the cultural spirit of the refinery, as the installation recreates its glorious era and unique lifestyle, making it a destination people long to visit.

Patterned Light Boxes: Sugar Stories

Representing the refinery's "Wufen" small train, this design combines sugarcane and sugar crystals to form a pattern of shared joy, hoping to transport sweet blessings into your daily life.

Beigang Mazu brings everyone together regardless of background. Because of Mazu, Beigang is a town of light and joy. This theme features Chaotian Temple and festival fireworks, surrounding you with radiant happiness.

Joyful people form blooming flowers of light, blessing every visitor to Beigang with the power of joy and radiance in their lives.
